Rummy Variation – Buraco Rummy

Love to play Indian Rummy? If you do, you will love to play the amazing game of Buraco Rummy. The most popular card game in the Persian Gulf has an interesting mix of card rules from all the online rummy variations.

Buraco Rummy is popularly known as ‘Baraziliya’ in the Middle East, as it is said to have originated in Argentina and Uruguay in 1940s; it is also called as Buraco in Portuguese. The most interesting aspect of this rummy variation is that four players play it in a partnership of two people to lay down cards in groups and sequences.

Buraco Rummy is played with two standard decks of 52 cards where the partners sit opposite to each other. The player sitting opposite next to the dealer has to cut the deck in exactly 22 cards. If he is able to cut the deck, his team will get 100 extra points. Then, two hands of eleven cards are stacked at the table to make the ‘Pots’.

Buraco Rummy has its own variations and it is not possible to compose all the game rules in one single article. Therefore, the common rules, played in most of the games are described below.

Game Rules

11 cards are dealt to each player and the remaining cards are placed face down at the table to form the ’Stock’. Both the teams have to make their collection of ‘Runs’.  There are many ways to form a run; some of them are mentioned below:

Sequences: A group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit arranged in a sequential order. For example, A ♣  2 ♣  3 ♣  4 ♣  5 ♣  6 ♣  7 ♣  8 ♣  9 ♣ 10 ♣  J ♣  Q ♣  K ♣

Groups: A group of three or more face-value cards of the same value. For example, J♥ J♠ J♦ J♣

Wildcards: All deuces are wild cards that can substitute any card in a run. For example, 3♠-4♠-5♠-6♠-7♠- 2♠- 9♠

The first team that scores 3000 points or more win the game of Buraco Rummy. Points can be scored by making runs or groups. Cards 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 have 5 points; cards 2, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K have 10 points; Aces have 15 points and Jokers have 20 points.
