Indian Rummy Rules Explained

The rules for playing rummy are pretty straightforward. The main objective of the game is to make sets and sequences out of the 13 cards we are dealt with. Once all the cards are arranged into sets and sequences, we will be able to declare the game.

Sequence: A sequence is obtained when 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit are arranged together. A sequence is called ‘pure’ if there are no ‘Jokers’ used to substitute the missing card. If a sequence has a Joker in it, it is called as ‘Impure Sequence’. A valid declaration should have at least one pure sequence. Eg: 7♥8♥9♥10♥ is a pure sequence.
Set: A set is obtained when 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits are arranged together. There should be at least one set for a valid declaration. Eg: 9♥9♣9♦ make a valid set. You can use a joker as an alternative to the missing card to make a sequence.

Rummy Gameplay

The gameplay of rummy is simple. Once the cards are dealt to the players, the player to the left of the dealer has the first chance to make a move. The first move is to pick a card; the player can either pick a card from the closed deck or from the open deck. After picking up a card, the player should discard an unwanted card from his hand to the discard pile or ‘open deck’. The game is played in clockwise direction and the gameplay continues.
